Your attention is one of your most valuable assets, as it determines where your energy flows.
Choose to focus your attention on the past, and your energy flows there.
Choose to focus on the power of now, and you immediately put yourself in the driver’s seat of life.
Where have you been placing attention lately?
1. How to Focus Your Attention on What Matters Most
One of the first lessons I teach anyone I work with is the power of self-awareness.
Becoming aware of how you think, feel, and act.
To become self-aware, you need to start by placing your attention inward on yourself.
Get curious about yourself and soon realize what captures most of your attention.
Set an alarm on your phone 3 times a day or even every hour by simply asking one question;
“What are you focusing your attention on?”
Ask yourself if your response serves you or not, and adjust accordingly.
2. Your Attention is a Limited Resource
The analogy I like to use is to share this concept: imagine every morning you are given 5 gallons of gas.
“What are you pouring this valuable and limited resource into?”
Here are 3 of the most common answers:
- “Into my kids and my family.”
- “My work consumes me.”
- “I’m all in on my education.”
All 5 gallons of fuel or energy in just one of these areas creates a state of imbalance.
These things matter but maintaining a balance with your resources is equally as important.
3. What You Focus on Expands
This is one of my favorite visuals to help you better understand the power of your attention.
Imagine anything you focus on getting larger and larger with every second your attention is on it.
What you place your attention on expands while what’s free from your attention contracts.
This is a function of both frequency and time.
4. Focus Your Energy and Attention on What You Can Control
We often focus on things out of our control, which wastes time and energy.
For example, focusing on someone else’s actions.
Focusing on experiences from the past.
Choose to focus your attention on things you can control, such as your attitude and effort.
When you awaken in the morning, focus on setting your morning intentions.
This will kickstart your day with a small win you intend to experience each and every day.
Conclusion
Reducing distractions is a final way to manage better where your attention goes.
If you’re working at the computer, put your phone upstairs and shut the tv off.
Distractions are what pull your attention away from where it often needs to be.
You will survive, I promise!
